Cost: $30 per team
This training program is designed to expand the number of universities participating in the AAPG Imperial Barrel Award Competition. This workshop offers graduate students, at universities with at least a master’s level degree in geoscience, the opportunity to learn about the AAPG’s IBA Competition. The IBA Competition provides valuable experience to student teams, through their participation in an exploration evaluation project, by presenting their results to a panel of senior industry experts and thereby competing to win recognition and significant prize money for their school. The team competition is a global exploration geosciences project focused on the assessment of the petroleum potential within a basin. Teams are provided with a complete dataset, and have a period of time to complete their assessment of the petroleum prospects of a part of the basin, before presenting their results.
The workshop begins with a description of petroleum systems, proceeds with a discussion of a play, and its elements—source, reservoir presence and quality, trap and seal, and the processes of maturation, migration, and timing. The core of this workshop will be the exercises, which focus on the process of analyzing basins, estimating the chance that all the play elements will occur, and then further defining where to explore.
