Summary: Experience the ‘Tale’ of the United States Geological map“A Tapestry
of Time and Terrain.” This digital wondermap expresses the geologic story of continental collision and break-up, mountain-building, river erosion and deposition, ice-cap glaciation, and other events and processes that have shaped the land. This TEKS-based, interactive workshop starts with a morning session, led by Stef Paramoure (2010 AAPG Teacher of the Year), Owen Hopkins (developer of the Maps in Schools Program), and Marsha Willis of the Texas Regional Collaboratives for Excellence in Science and Mathematics Teaching (TRC). It will provide training on specific features of the map, and several TEKS-correlated lesson ideas and lab activities. The afternoon offers a field trip opportunity, led by Dr. Bill Ward, for participants to experience first hand, the geology of the Canyon Gorge. Each participant will leave with a copy of the Tapestry of Time and Terrain map, lab activities, Earth Science podcast information, personal images captured during the field trip, and a Gorge Documentary DVD.
Attendees should be prepared to travel, after the morning session in San Antonio, by private car to the field-trip location at Canyon Lake, about 40 miles north of San Antonio.
Professional development hours will be awarded for participation, through the Center for Science and Math at Our Lady of the Lake University.
